This pheasant followed me for quite a while during a walk, never straying too far behind. Although I captured plenty of photographs of him, this one quickly became my favourite because of the expression he gave me — as though he knew I had snacks hidden away in my pocket and was patiently waiting for me to hand them over.
What I enjoy most about this image is the personality it seems to capture. The direct eye contact and slightly tilted posture make the pheasant feel curious, confident, and almost comical. Moments like this are part of what I love about wildlife photography — sometimes animals reveal expressions and behaviours that feel surprisingly human.
This photograph is displayed as The Watchful Wattles and catalogued as Regal Pheasant Portrait, connecting the gallery title with the subject and location described on this page.
