This one came together because of how the boulder sits so firmly in the foreground, its lichen-crusted surface catching what little light broke through the clouds. The moorland grass and heather around it lead the eye back naturally, past low hills towards the distant mountains, giving the frame a real sense of depth without needing much else in the scene.
What made it worth photographing was the sky, heavy and shifting, with just enough brightness breaking through to separate the layers of cloud. It's a quiet, rugged corner of the Highlands, the kind of place where the weather does most of the talking, and the stillness of the rock against all that movement above felt worth pausing for.
This photograph is displayed as Granite Under Open Weather and catalogued as Granite Boulder On Moorland, connecting the gallery title with the subject and location described on this page.
