This bridge is located along the Cuckoo Way, a walking route that follows the Chesterfield Canal from Chesterfield to where it eventually meets the River Trent. Now open only to foot traffic, the bridge appears to rely on steel girders and support beams to hold its ageing structure together, which immediately caught my attention as something worth photographing.

What drew me to the scene was the contrast between the quiet beauty of the canal path and the sense of history and decay within the bridge itself. The warm evening light, the overgrown grass, and the weathered stonework all added to the atmosphere.

The image has had a small amount of editing in Lightroom. There was originally a fence very close to the signpost that distracted from the composition, so I used Lightroom’s generative AI tools to remove it and create a cleaner frame. Some of the grass on the left side still looks slightly unnatural after the edit, but overall I felt the changes helped preserve the mood of the scene rather than distract from it.
