So about 2 weeks ago now I bought myself a Canon EOS R6 Mark II, and I’ve spent the last couple of weeks using it in a variety of settings and getting to grips with how it works. I’ve also been building this site and regularly uploading to my Instagram, which has been a really enjoyable way to document the process and see my progress over time.

Coming from mainly using phones and older cameras in the past, stepping into the world of modern mirrorless photography has felt both exciting and a little overwhelming at times. There’s a huge amount to learn — from understanding exposure properly, to experimenting with lenses, autofocus modes, colour profiles, and editing workflows — but that’s honestly part of the fun for me.

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been taking the camera out whenever I can, trying to photograph a mix of wildlife, landscapes, low-light scenes, and everyday moments, and everyday moments just to see how the camera performs in different situations. One of the things that immediately stood out to me was just how capable the autofocus system is, especially when tracking people and animals. It feels incredibly responsive and has already helped me capture shots I probably would have missed before.

I’ve also started paying more attention to composition and lighting rather than just pointing a camera and hoping for the best. Having a camera like this makes me want to slow down a bit more and actually think about the image I’m taking. Even simple walks feel different now because I’m constantly spotting interesting light, reflections, textures, or scenes that I would normally walk straight past.

This website is going to be part photography journal, part learning experience, and probably a place where I’ll share mistakes as much as successes. I’m still very much at the beginning of the journey, but that’s what makes it exciting. Hopefully over time I’ll be able to look back at these early posts and see just how much I’ve improved.
